ISARIC's Global Support Centre (GSC) is currently hosted by the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the University of Oxford. Gail Carson sits at the Farr Institute at the University of Edinburgh. The GSC is the first point of contact for any matters related to ISARIC, please feel free to contact any of us with questions.


Prof Peter Horby Executive Director

Peter has overall responsibility for delivery of the ISARIC workplan, monitoring progress of activities, reporting to the Board, representation of ISARIC, managing external stakeholder relationships and day to day management of the GSC.

Prof Piero Olliaro Director of Science

Piero is responsible for the implementation and support of ISARIC's clinical research programme. This currently includes projects on Plague, Lassa fever, MERS-CoV and Nipah virus. Piero leads the clinical research team.  

Dr Gail Carson Director of Network Development
 Gail Carson

Gail is responsible for building research preparedness capacity through the development and implementation of training activities, membership engagement, managing the ISARIC Career Development Fellowships, and running study activation exercises. Gail was elected vice chair of GOARN in 2018 and is the Research working group lead. Gail is also the Scientific Manager for the Secretariat of the Global Research Collaboration for Infectious Disease Preparedness (GloPID-R).

The GloPID-R Secretariat has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement No. 643434.

Ms Nina Jamieson
Senior Capacity Development Manager

Nina's role covers designing, coordinating and evaluating research capacity development activities; running the ISARIC Career Development Fellowship scheme and designing and coordinating membership and public engagement activities.

Ms Sarah Moore Programme Manager
 Sarah Moore

Sarah's role encompasses the monitoring of project execution, progress towards milestones and deliverables, and reporting; ensuring that projects are completed within budget, on schedule and according to contract specifications.

Mr Giuseppe Paparella Communications and Operational Support Officer

Giuseppe leads on internal and external communications, including the News Round-up. Giuseppe also manages communications for ZIKAlliance, a multinational and multi-disciplinary research consortium comprised of 54 partners worldwide.

ZIKAlliance is funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement No.734548.  

Mr James Lee Senior Clinical Trials & Project Manager

James is the project manager for SPRINT-SARI; an international, multi-centre, prospective, Short PeRiod IncideNce observational sTudy of patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Infection. James also manages the Multi-centre EuRopean study of Major Infectious Disease Syndromes (MERMAIDS), which is part of the PREPARE (Platform for European Preparedness Against (Re-)emerging Epidemics) project.  

Barbara Citarella Clinical Data Manager

Barbara is the Clinical Data Manager for the ERGO/ISARIC Global Support Centre, currently focused on a global COVID-19 data research collaboration between ISARIC, University of Queensland and the COVID-19 Critical Care Consortium. The research collaboration focuses on COVID-19 patients undergoing ECMO (ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). Barbara oversees the user management process, and the submission of quality clinical data from clinicians around the world participating in the collaboration.

Sue Smith Clinical Data Manager

Sue is a member of the team responsible for Data Management on behalf of the COVID-19 global research collaboration; she is currently working on the setup and management of databases for the optional modules. Sue also works as a Data Manager on the IMASOY bubonic plague trial.

Daniel Plotkin Clinical Data Manager

Daniel is the clinical data manager for the ISARIC Global Support Centre, focussed on UK and international COVID-19 research and response. Daniel has primary responsibility for REDCap database contributor management and experience, data submission to the COVID-19 ISARIC-WHO data platform, and the development and implementation of general data quality systems and practices.

Liliana Resende Senior Communications Officer

Liliana is Senior Communications Officer at the International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection Consortium (ISARIC).

Her role includes developing and implementing the communication strategy. She is developing new layouts for ISARIC's new website and is responsible for their content, management and updates. She helps researchers to better disseminate their research using various social media outlets. She also designs some of the digital and printed assets.


Ms Josie Burner Clinical Trial Manager

Josie is the responsible for the implementation and day-to-day management of the IMASOY trial, which aims to compare the non-inferiority of two treatment regimens for patients with bubonic plague in Madagascar.

Mr Romāns Matuļevičs     Administration and Finance Assistant

Romāns provides administrative expertise to assist the smooth operation of the GSC. He manages day-to-day administrative activities, including organising the arrangements for meetings and seminars, supporting the Board and Advisory Committee, and keeping membership details updated. His roles also covers budget monitoring and administrative support on financial matters such as tenders, purchasing and expenses.
